A good mail day...

Two nice freebies in the mail yesterday!  12 hot chocolate K cups (Matt will take them to work) and 3 green tea bags!

Cadence got a little package from Nana and Dadder, and Piper and I got another baby carrier (the Beco Butterfly 2 for only $20 out of my pocket), and Matt got some batteries for school.

Deals of the Week

While I don't have as much time as I would like for getting deals these days, I am usually able to get a great deal at CVS, like I did this week.  Both these products were free - well, I paid $.10 in tax, because I had $1 off coupons and they were priced at $.99.  Yay!

Theme of the Week: Ballet and Dance

Oh my goodness is Cadence ever interested in ballet.  We decided she can start taking ballet classes next fall when she turns 4, and she talks about it ALL THE TIME.  What she'll wear, how she'll learn the "hard moves", the new kids she'll meet...She also loves to wear her tutus and leotards around the house.

So this past week our theme was ballet and dance.  Here's some of our activities:

Reading: Dogs Don't Do Ballet by Anna Kemp, Dancing Class by Ziefert, Watch me Dance by Andrea Davis Pinkney, Color Dance by Ann Jonas

Letter Awareness: B for Ballet

Art Project: Decorate a letter B with pink tissue paper to look like a tutu

Crafting: Help Mama make a tutu for Piper?  Maybe...

Watch: Sesame Street: Zoe's Dance Moves (from Netflix) and Barney's Dance with Me

Extras: Learn Fingerplay- Tommy Thumbs (he goes "dancing all around the town")

See, my baby's name isn't that weird after all...

According to this article, Piper was the 100th most popular girl baby name of 2011.  Coming in behind other unusual names like Violet, Aria, and Hadley. Interesting!

See the story of Piper's name here.

Theme of the Week: Snow!

We're back to theme weeks around here, just to add a little structure to Cadie's play/learning time (because play is learning, y'all) and to help her work on some skills she's interested in.  This week is snow.  Here's some of the activities we're doing -

Reading: Stranger in the Woods, The Snowy Day and Snowmen at Night

Fine Motor: Beaded Snowflakes

Art:  Snow Crayon Resist Painting - use white crayon on white paper, then paint over with blue watercolor, and the white "snow" will appear

Math: shape snowman

Crafting: Borax Snowflakes - maybe...

Food: Make Snowball cookies, and Snowman Pizza, and tortilla snowflakes

Letter Awareness: S

Extras: Watch Blue's Clues "A Snowy Day" (season 1, ep. 10), Snowman paper doll fold rhyme (one of my old storytime tricks)

Easy t-shirt headband

Piper can totally rock a headband. She got a set of cute clippy hairbows for Christmas, but she obviously doesn't have enough hair for them yet, so I made a little t-shirt headband to clip them to.  (I sort of mashed-up directions from here and here.)

It was easy and quick but still took me about a week to finish because it's hard to find a decent chunk of time (like oh, 5 minutes!) to work on something that's not essential to our household functioning.
The steps:
*cut a 2 inch by 16 inch piece from an old white tee
*sew up the long side, turn inside out to make a tube
*insert one end inside the other and zig zag over to make headband
* cut a small rectangle and hold around headband, sew together then turn inside out to make the little loop to clip the bow on
*position that little loop over the seam on the headband so it looks nice and pretty!

Serious baby.
